Autumn 2009

My Art Diary

01/10/2009

Out most of the day.  I continued to work on IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE during the limited time I was actually in my studio.

02/10/2009

I carried on painting the pencil lines on IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.  This was another day when I had too many other things to do - I sold some paintings though.

03/10/2009

I finished off IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE; completing the painting of the pencil lines and then minimal filling in, detailing etc.

05/10/2009

I returned to HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM after a long break.  I added symbols which were based on initiating shapes added when I did the first stage but which also refer to the theme.  These symbols evolve on an abstract level and can be subsequently viewed on an inter-referential basis.

06/10/2009

I finished detailing and added imagery to HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM - the inference being that the work is completed.  I will never be sure with this type of picture.

I looked at its companion painting, THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE but didn't get any farther than that

07/10/2009

I began detailing and adding thematic matarial to THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.  Like the previous work the symbols evolve from a small number of initial images although they have more internal relevance in this work.

08/10/2009

I was out all morning but carried on with THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE all afternoon.  There is more detailing needed with this work but also more scope to explore the theme.

09/10/2009

I finished THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE; This work has more homogeneity and linkage between the image sets - which doesn't mean I am that pleased with it!  I've currently got a huge number of works to complete so I'm not sure where I will go next.  Family day tomorrow.

12/10/2009

I pulled out another painting from my huge stack of unfinished works; this time a work I started much earlier entitled THREE BATHERS (a pendant to SEATED WOMAN  which I belatedly finished in 2007).  The structure and main paint layer was finished so all I have to do is "attach" the symbols and other imagery.

13/10/2009

After a considerable number of interruptions I managed to get into my studio to continue work on THREE BATHERS.  I added more images (based on facial features, body parts or symbols representing our passage through life).  Hopefully I will finish it tomorrow - depending, of course, on the level of interruptions I receive!

14/10/2009

I finished THREE BATHERS, adding the rest of the images and doing a modicum of filling in and other detailing.

I then pulled out four other unfinished canvases: MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION, THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY, WOMAN WITH CHILD BEHIND A DIFFUSIVE ELABORATION OF A CLASSICAL THEME, WOMAN WITH CHILD INTERMIXED WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  In the end I only worked on the first named - adding further lines and shapes in charcoal and then paint.

15/10/2009

A funny day.  I was out visiting in the morning and rescuing a cat (of all things!) in the afternoon.  I had little time to paint but did do further work MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.

16/10/2009

I started the day by adding a bit of extra detailing to THREE BATHERS (a bit I forgot on Wednesday).

I then added detailing and "proto-symbols" to THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY.  Much more to be done.

I also did some more of my little pencil landscapes while sitting next to my wife in a doctors surgery.

17/10/2009

I worked out in my head a lot of potential artworks but didn't do a massive amount of actual painting.  I continued with THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY, adding further symbols and detailing.  I also did a fair bit of writing.

18/10/2009

I worked all day on a practical wildlife conservation project, when I got in I did a little more work on THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY - not much though.

19/10/2009

I worked for a large part of the day (domestic activities allowing!) on THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY. I added the main thematic element: improvisational symbols which evolve when repeated.

20/10/2009

I finished adding all the imagery to THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY, this includes an extra section which I added today.

I then started work on another unfinished picture entitled WOMAN WITH CHILD BEHIND A DIFFUSIVE ELABORATION OF A CLASSICAL THEME, mainly redefining the original charcoal/acrylic medium lines around some of the shapes.

21/10/2009

I finished repainting the lines on WOMAN WITH CHILD BEHIND A DIFFUSIVE ELABORATION OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  I then started doing likewise to WOMAN WITH CHILD INTERMIXED WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

Both works were provisionally re-titled to WOMAN AND CHILD BEHIND A SERIAL PAINTING and WOMAN AND CHILD IN FRONT AND BEHIND A SERIAL PAINTING respectively.

22/10/2009

I finished the line repainting on WOMAN AND CHILD IN FRONT AND BEHIND A SERIAL PAINTING.  As I was late getting into my studio I didn't have time to start anything else.

23/10/2009

I filled in the symbols on THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY which, after a tad of further detailing completed the work.  I doubt if I will have time to work over the weekend (paperwork and gardening etc.) and I am going to an all day first aid course on Monday so probably no more painting until Tuesday.

24/10/2009

As expected I spent all day catching up on paperwork and sundry other tasks.  I did also hoover the studio floor for probably only the second time this year!

25/10/2009

This is going to be a very disrupted week, with the probable exception of Tuesday and Saturday, any work will have to be done at odd times.  I didn't do any painting today but made notes for additional elements for GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION - enhanced title.

27/10/2009

I carried on adding elements to GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION; changing the composition, although conventional compositional rules do not apply to this style of painting.  Out all day tomorrow, probably writing rather than painting in the evening.

30/10/2009

I didn't find time to paint yesterday although I did do a fair bit of writing.  Today I carried on with GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION; I painted in all the compositional amendments I made earlier in the week and made further changes.

31/10/2009

I continued to work on GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION; adding detailing and more compositional changes etc..  The weather forecast for Sunday (gardening day!) is dire so I went out in the garden in the afternoon, consequently time in my studio was somewhat curtailed.

01/11/2009

I finished the preliminary stages of GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION: I repainted the lines and added further detailing.  I now have to add the images.  As predicted it rained most of the day!

02/11/2009

I started to add imagery GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.  Each colour/size/shape (ie. atom) has a different image type.  Early end to the day.

03/11/2009

Late start to the day.  I carried on with GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION, adding further imagery.

05/11/2009

A bit of a late start but I actually got a lot of imagery added to GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.  With luck I will get all the images painted in tomorrow; I will then have to fill them in with colour next week.

06/11/2009

I finished adding all the imagery to GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.  I was working in my studio until quite late in the evening as I dawdled in the morning.

07/11/2009

Cleaned my brushes and then went out into the garden.  All I did today was write and draw.  Wildlife conservation tomorrow!

09/11/2009

I filled in some of the images in GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.  The remainder I will leave as they are.  I concluded at well after ten p.m. that I had finished the work.

10/11/2009

In the morning light I decided to paint in further images in GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR - MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION.  I finished this just before going out with my wife.  I am happy the work in now complete!

11/11/2009

I started painting the images on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  I started with two columns of facial feature variations, completing these before moving onto a column of alternating bands of calligraphic and geometric foot variations.  The child will have alternating calligraphic and hand variations.

12/11/2009

I was out in the morning but spent all afternoon in my studio.  I did another column of image variations on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

13/11/2009

I carried on with WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  I have now added all the face/body variations and also did the main series of figurative fantasy images.

14/11/2009

Raining outside - all writing (and odd jobs!); no painting.

16/11/2009

I spent most of the day working on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME (apart from a couple of hours out with my wife).  I have continued to add figurative and other images which will be filled in with colour in due course - hopefully I will get this stage completed tomorrow.

17/11/2009

I didn't have as much time in my studio today as I originally thought so, although I did quite a lot, I still have more images to paint on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

18/11/2009

I finished adding all the imagery on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  I also did a bit of extra detailing so now all that needs to be done is fill in some of the images - I'll try and get this finished next week.

After this I started adding images (in oils) to the pendant work of the above called WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME - I didn't get a lot done.

19/11/2009

I worked again on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME, adding more human feature variations.  Because of a late start I didn't get as much done as I planned.

20/11/2009

I carried on adding images to WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME, including the main thematic scene (from which the figurative series of images will be derived from).

I also started a new series of crayon drawings in a sketch book.

21/11/2009

A bit of a laid back Saturday but I finished adding the human feature variations, plus more of the fantasy figurative developmental sequence, to WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  This work and its companion may be the only pictures I've done this year I actually like.

22/11/2009

I varnished (with final gloss varnish) nine paintings for future collection then dedicated my time to family things and eventually gardening.

23/11/2009

Reasonably busy day.  I am still adding images to WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME - figurative fantasy and abstracted shapes.

25/11/2009

I was out with my wife yesterday (shopping!).  Today I carried on with WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME - I continue to add image variation sequences.

26/11/2009

Late start but I still did quite a lot of work adding image streams to WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.  This is a complex work with a number of superposed evolving images strands.

27/11/2009

I completed the image adding stage of WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME; most will have to filled in with paint.

A the end of the session in my studio I started to paint in calligraphic facial feature variations (one of probably two sequences) on BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL; I hope to carry on with this tomorrow.

28/11/2009

On the spur of the moment I made a number of amendments to a painting completed at the beginning of the year: THE FALL OF ISIS IN KIT FORM.  Initially I drew in outlines which I meant to paint in but had to go out.

29/11/2009

I filled in all the imagery and made other additions to THE FALL OF ISIS IN KIT FORM; finishing this.  I spent the rest of the time working on the computer - not sure if I did anything productive!

30/11/2009

I was taken very ill Sunday night.  Couldn't paint today although I managed to do some work on the computer in the afternoon.

01/12/2009

Did a modest amount of painting.  I began painting in all the images in WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

I felt marginally better in my self but some of the symptoms (without going into details) got worse.

02/12/2009

I took a turn for the worse and had to rush to health centre (twice!) - however, in between all this I carried on with WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

03/12/2009

On medication and managed a little more painting: filling in images on WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

04/12/2009

Still feeling ill but did do a bit of painting.  I completed WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME with the exception of the outer perimeter.

I then started filling in the images on WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME - not a huge amount done though.

05/12/2009

I carried on filling in images on WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME but I have absolutely no energy at all - work is difficult!

06/12/2009

Lousy weather (typical Sunday); I spent some time in my studio working on WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME.

07/12/2009

I'm still working on WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME but didn't get much done today - out Christmas shopping with my wife!!

08/12/2009

I finished painting WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME except for the perimeter.  I had a better day today.

11/12/2009

I spent Wednesday in the garden and yesterday out with my family.  Today I painted the perimeters of WOMAN WITH CHILD WITH A SEQUENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME and WOMAN AND CHILD WITH A DIFFUSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF A CLASSICAL THEME, finishing both pictures - this and work in the garden and on the computer used up the whole day.

12/12/2009

After giving it a degree of thought in the week, I added images, structures and paint areas (plus other amendments) to a painting ostensibly completed in 2005; namely: A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING "ION - SUNRISE".  On reflection I probably just changed the painting rather than improved it.

13/12/2009

Sunday and I started the charcoal drawing stage of three works: two smallish square canvases entitled FACE and TIM respectively and a small canvas board with the title of TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT.  I didn't get very far as I had a lot of work to do on my website.

14/12/2009

I finished the preliminary charcoal drawing of TIM, FACE and TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT.  Once this was completed I worked on the computers rather than take the paintings any further.

15/12/2009

I went over the charcoal lines of TIM, FACE and TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT with acrylic medium.  Like yesterday, one this was done I worked on the computers (until very late in the day).

16/12/2009

I started to paint TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT but didn't make as much rapid progress as usual - partly because I had to go to town three times!

17/12/2009

After a morning of visiting people I finished the main painting stage of TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT.  Hopefully I will complete the work next week; I need to add several grades of symbols.

18/12/2009

I had to do my Christmas cards (plus countless domestic things) so not much time to paint.  I started work on TIM.

19/12/2009

I went out to see Father Christmas today (I think I have been good!).  I only had time for drawing and work on the computer.

20/12/2009

A very cold Sunday!  I continued working on TIM, almost completing the main painting stage.  I spent much of the latter part of the day writing.

21/12/2009

I was baby sitting most of the day although I did have time to find time to finish the main stage of TIM.

Sketch book drawings in the evening.

22/12/2009

Baby sitting again but shot into my studio mid-afternoon and did a large part of the first stage of FACE.

23/12/2009

I completed the first stage of FACE and then spent the rest of the day writing.

24/12/2009

I repainted the lines (in oil this time) on the three latest works: FACE, TIM and TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT.  This will be the last time in my studio until after Christmas as all other pending painting jobs are major, so it is pointless starting them.  I might do some drawing.

27/12/2009

I only did little creative odds and ends today - not really worth recording them.

28/12/2009

I started to add small symbols (proto-images) to TIM; completing the main strand before domestic activities took over.

29/12/2009

Out in the morning, completed more parts of TIM by adding imagery in the afternoon - plus I made notes for other works.

30/12/2009

I completed painting in the images on TIM (TIM THE MACHINE or THE TIM MACHINE); I then partially repainted elements in the work.  All being well it will be finished off in the New Year.

31/12/2009

I returned to THE TIM MACHINE to make further additions and amendments; I then had to go out and when I finally got back it was too late to start working on TIM - EXTRUDED PORTRAIT as planned.  I started experimenting with my graphic tablet which I purchased years ago but have never used; the rest of the day was spent playing around with this - although nothing was saved!

Next year I want to be more productive (I only finished fifty seven works this year): I will try and get in my studio for longer and work harder when I am in there (knowing me something will crop up!).
