Summer
2008
| 01/07/2008
I had to get some paintings framed
in the morning. In the afternoon I painted the main colour layer
of I OPENED THE BEACH HUT DOOR AND SAW A GROUP OF PEOPLE HOLDING HANDS
AND CHANTING IN THE EMBRACE OF AN ANCESTRAL DAWN - amended title.
After this I completed the main
stage of I DESCENDED THE STAIRS NAKED AND SAW A MULTITUDE OF HOLES IN THE
BARE WALL (but didn't change the title!). |
| 02/07/2008
I painted the main layer of I WOKE
UP AND SAW HUNDREDS OF BIG FISH BURROWING HEAD FIRST INTO THE SOFT SOIL
OF THE CEMETERY. I didn't manage anything else. |
| 03/07/2008
Late start and second Wimbledon
week so I started work on three odd panels which I could approach in a
casual and spontaneous way. I had put a thick layer of textured green
acrylic on these earlier in the year and on top of this I added a simple
series of abstracted imagery. |
| 04/07/2008
I finished adding the imagery to
the three green panels and then painted them in. However I do not
consider these paintings to be complete. They have the working titles
of: FIVE EPISODES FROM AN EVOLUTIONARY LANDSCAPE, HUMAN FIGURE AS LANDSCAPE
and DRAMATIC LANDSCAPE IN SEVEN SCENES. |
| 05/07/2008
Saturday and I returned to a work
started some time ago (ie. ALL STONE CIRCLES RESIDE INSIDE A SINGLE CELL)
and painted over the initial charcoal lines with fluid acrylic paint. |
| 06/07/2008
A wet Sunday so I started to paint
over the charcoal lines of a companion piece to the above painting (ie.
SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY). However, I also did
some work on the computer so I didn't finish it - hopefully tomorrow. |
| 07/07/2008
Odd jobs first thing, I then finished
painting over the charcoal lines on SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE
HISTORY.
After this I started to draw in
the figurative images in FIVE PRESENTATIONS OF SUPERREALITY - SEE IF YOU
CAN SPOT THE FICTIONAL CHARACTER (EVOLUTIONARY TREATISE WITH AN ANDROID
AS THE SEMINAL RELIGIOUS FIGURE). After this I went out. |
| 08/07/2008
I finished drawing in all the images
in FIVE PRESENTATIONS OF SUPERREALITY - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT THE FICTIONAL
CHARACTER (EVOLUTIONARY TREATISE WITH AN ANDROID AS THE SEMINAL RELIGIOUS
FIGURE) and then went over the pencil lines with thin acrylic paint.
This took most of the day although I also did a number of sketch book drawings. |
| 09/07/2008
I completed FIVE PRESENTATIONS OF
SUPERREALITY - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT THE FICTIONAL CHARACTER (EVOLUTIONARY
TREATISE WITH AN ANDROID AS THE SEMINAL RELIGIOUS FIGURE) - with a modicum
of redrawing/repainting! I started thinking about a series of very
large works (I bought the canvases last year) - made some notes but didn't
get that far. |
| 10/07/2008
I went over the pencil lines around
the main structures of AN ARTIST ALONE IN A ROOM ACCIDENTALLY DISCOVERS
A PAINTING (A RANDOM ARRANGEMENT OF BOXES EACH STATING THAT TIME IS SPURIOUS).
I then started to do likewise to
TRIPTYCH: WHEN I LOOK IN A MIRROR I SEE ALL OF MY DEAD ANCESTORS - A MULTIPLE
OF SELVES; NOT ALL EXISTING AT THE SAME TIME - SOME TIME AFTER MY DEATH
I STARTED THINKING AGAIN - but didn't finish it. |
| 11/07/2008
Out all day collecting paintings. |
| 12/07/2008
I varnished and framed a number
of oil paintings (I still don't keep a record of the paintings I varnish
and what varnish I use - I always used too).
In the afternoon I completed the
repainting of the block lines on TRIPTYCH: WHEN I LOOK IN A MIRROR I SEE
ALL OF MY DEAD ANCESTORS - A MULTIPLE OF SELVES; NOT ALL EXISTING AT THE
SAME TIME - SOME TIME AFTER MY DEATH I STARTED THINKING AGAIN
I had a studio visit and sold
a "Meditative Field Painting". |
| 14/07/2008
I started the day by pencilling
in the room shapes in the boxes on SEVERAL (SIX, FOUR, TWO) FIGURES IN
A DARKENED ROOM - THE INVENTION OF STOCHASTIC FURNITURE (MARIE ANTOINETTE
VERSION).
I then started adding the figurative
imagery to a work I originally planned to be THE BALLAD OF MATTY GROVES
- THE UNDERGROUND VERSION but I am reusing the structures for a new more
spontaneous drawing/painting with the working title: AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN,
LIGHTS HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE. I also went over some of the
earlier pencil lines with acrylic medium. |
| 15/07/2008
I carried on adding images (initially
in pencil) to AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN, LIGHTS HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE.
I did a fair bit but a little more remains to be done. I also went
over some of the earlier pencil embellishments with acrylic paint. |
| 16/07/2008
I finished adding all the pencil
imagery to AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN, LIGHTS HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE.
I then painted over the background
pencil lines within the squares in SEVERAL (SIX, FOUR, TWO) FIGURES IN
A DARKENED ROOM - THE INVENTION OF STOCHASTIC FURNITURE (MARIE ANTOINETTE
VERSION). |
| 17/07/2008
I was out much of the day, when
I came in I devoted my time to paperwork and similar jobs - Although I
did do a bit of drawing in the evening. |
| 18/07/2008
I painted inside all the pencil
images on AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN, LIGHTS HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE with
predominantly white paint today. With luck I will paint over the
pencil lines tomorrow - I will do as much as possible anyway.
Slipped a disc so sitting at my
easel was a bit painful! |
| 19/07/2008
As planned I went over all the pencil
lines (with paynes grey acrylic) on AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN, LIGHTS HIS PIPE
AND STARTS TO SMOKE. This took until the early evening - still with
a bad back. |
| 20/07/2008
Not much creative work done this
Sunday. However I did make some notes for AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN, LIGHTS
HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE and several other Peter Panic pictures. |
| 21/07/2008
I finished AN OLD MAN SITS DOWN,
LIGHTS HIS PIPE AND STARTS TO SMOKE by adding simple symbols and words
to the foreground structures.
I then did the drawing stage, first
in pencil and then in acrylic, of a new "Meditative Landscape" on a circular
panel. It has the working title of LANDSCAPE APHORISM, "ALL TREES
POINT TO HEAVEN". The work is derived from a photo in a Wiltshire
magazine. |
| 22/07/2008
Very late last night I put an acrylic
wash (paint, water and acrylic medium) on LANDSCAPE APHORISM, "ALL TREES
POINT TO HEAVEN".
During the day I started to add
figurative imagery to THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM DERIVED
FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE. All the work was done
in pencil - to be painted over in due course.
During the evening I experimentally
repainted parts of ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT
while listening to the cricket commentary. I will almost certainly
paint over some of this. |
| 23/07/2008
I spent all day adding pencil images
to the relevant squares on THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM
DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE. Nothing else
was done. |
| 24/07/2008
I finished all the pencil images
on THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS
OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE.
I then repainted part of the amendments
to ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT (as predicted!).
After this I started to add the
pencil images to THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE RETOLD - A PETE PANIC PAINTING.
I had to go out in the evening. |
| 25/07/2008
I completed all the pencil images
on THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE RETOLD - A PETE PANIC PAINTING. Progress was
a little slow and this took all day. |
| 26/07/2008
Out with June all day. All
I did was a handful of pencil drawings. |
| 28/07/2008
I worked again on THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE
RETOLD - A PETE PANIC PAINTING. I added text and symbols derived
initially from the figurative imagery (relatively roughly painted). |
| 29/07/2008
I started to go over the pencil
images with fluid acrylic on THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE RETOLD - A PETE PANIC
PAINTING - doing about two thirds. |
| 30/07/2008
I completed the painting over of
the pencil lines on THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE RETOLD - A PETE PANIC PAINTING.
I then started to paint over the
pencil images on THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM DERIVED
FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE - doing about a third. |
| 31/07/2008
Another third done of the painting
over of the pencil lines on THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM
DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE. Slow progress
this! England is not doing as well as hoped in the Third Test. |
| 01/08/2008
I finished painting the image lines
of THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS
OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE. This somehow took all day!
I have now declared THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE
RETOLD - A PETE PANIC PAINTING finished. |
| 02/08/2008
A day spent on long put off paper
work and art related work on the computer. Very little actual creative
work done, although I did a bit of shading on THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF
MY UNIVERSAL THEOREM DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE
- thus completing this work. |
| 03/08/2008
A wet Sunday so more "paperwork".
I didn't have much to show for it at the end of the day though. |
| 04/08/2008
I spent all morning sorting through
some of my stored works. I will photographs many of these this week
(all being well!). I went out in the afternoon so not a creatively
productive day. |
| 05/08/2008
Tired today (probably something
to do with the time I went to bed!) so did not get on as well as hoped.
I did the basic pencil drawing stage - subsequently painted over - of three
small works all entitled FIGURE VARIATION. They are based on a work
completed in 2006 entitled NUDE OUTDOORS. I almost started three
more but got distracted with domestic things. |
| 06/08/2008
I got up later today! I did
the main painting stage of all three FIGURE VARIATION paintings (using
acrylic paint).
I then started an oil/acrylic work
entitled BUST OF A WOMAN. I sketched in the main details using a
combination of pencil and charcoal and then painted in the acrylic area.
June and I went out in the evening otherwise it would have been an even
better day. |
| 07/08/2008
I added the (fairly) spontaneous
symbols to the three paintings entitled FIGURE VARIATION (AFTER NUDE OUTDOORS)
ONE. TWO & THREE, thus completing the works.
I then did the main painting stage
of BUST OF A WOMAN. |
| 08/08/2008
We had visitors in the morning.
In the afternoon I did the pencil stage, which I then painted over with
thin acrylic paint, of three small works. Two are entitled FLOWERS
BEFORE A FACE and the third is entitled SELF PORTRAIT IN A CLOUD.
In the evening I painted the margin
of BUST OF A WOMAN. |
| 09/08/2008
Out with June and my father most
of the day. When I got in I acrylic varnished FIGURE VARIATION (AFTER
NUDE OUTDOORS) ONE. TWO & THREE plus NUDE OUT DOORS, STILL LIFE IN
A LANDSCAPE and MICRO-LANDSCAPE THREE with a oil/acrylic varnish.
These works have been purchased and will need posting off on Monday. |
| 11/08/2008
I spent most of my free time in
the garden in an attempt to catch up. When in my studio I completed
the main painting stage of the small work: SELF PORTRAIT WITH MY HEAD IN
A CLOUD (title variation). |
| 12/08/2008
Another morning dedicated to domestic
activities. In the afternoon I did the main painting stage of the other
two small works - both called: FLOWERS BEFORE A FACE. |
| 13/08/2008
I had to take the rabbit to the
vets which meant yet another morning devoted to domestic activities.
In the afternoon I added symbols and other detailing to PORTRAIT IN A CLOUD
(the final title) which completed this work. |
| 14/08/2008
I did the drawing stage - pencil
immediately painted over - of two new portraits. Probable title of
both works is PICTURE OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR. |
| 15/08/2008
I added symbols to BUST OF A WOMAN
- these will need filling in plus other detailing.
I did the main painting stage of
PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR - MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPE VERSION.
I then painted the perimeter of this painting and PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH
RED HAIR - MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART VERSION (the titles have evolved since
yesterday). I expect to do paperwork tomorrow and gardening on Sunday
- ditto future weekends. |
| 16/08/2008
I didn't do any paperwork (damn
it!), but did do gardening. I also painted in the symbols of BUST
OF A WOMAN which finished the work. You can guarantee I will be gardening
again on Sunday! |
| 18/08/2008
I did the main painting stage of
PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR - MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART VERSION - nothing
else and still no paperwork. |
| 19/08/2008
I went out with June in the early
afternoon. Consequently all I had time for was to repaint the lines
of PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR - MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPE VERSION.
I need to add symbols and additional detailing. |
| 20/08/2008
I repainted the lines on PORTRAIT
OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR - MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART VERSION.
I then started painting the circular
panel entitled: LANDSCAPE APHORISM, "ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN". |
| 21/08/2008
I finished the initial painting
stage of LANDSCAPE APHORISM, "ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN". This took
all of my available time. |
| 22/08/2008
I repainted the lines on LANDSCAPE
APHORISM, "ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN". Additional details remain
to be added. |
| 23/08/2008
Should have done paperwork but didn't.
I spent most of the day in the garden although I did a little work on LANDSCAPE
APHORISM, "ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN". |
| 24/08/2008
The middle of the holiday weekend
and most of today was given over to domestic tasks. However, I added
all the remaining images on LANDSCAPE APHORISM, "ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN"
which finished the work. |
| 25/08/2008
Bank Holiday Monday. I got
up very late, worked out the images for PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR
- MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART VERSION and PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR -
MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPE VERSION and then went out in the garden. |
| 26/08/2008
Back to normal! I added all the
symbols (and then painted them in) on PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR
- MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART VERSION and PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH RED HAIR -
MEDITATIVE LANDSCAPE VERSION, completing both works. |
| 27/08/2008
I moved from working on current
paintings and returned to a work initially completed in 1997 entitled:
IMPROVISATION - THE FUTURE BEFORE THE PAST. I decided the lines were
not strong enough so I began to repaint them with thin blue black oil paint.
There are two works in this series which I want to amend. |
| 28/08/2008
I was out in the morning, when back
I continued repainting the lines on IMPROVISATION - THE FUTURE BEFORE THE
PAST. This is a very protracted process. |
| 29/08/2008
A full day painting (and listening
to cricket!), again I carried on redefining the lines on IMPROVISATION
- THE FUTURE BEFORE THE PAST. |
| 30/08/2008
I meant to devote the day to paper/promotional
work but didn't. I did some gardening and I did some painting and
apart form multifarious domestic activities, that was it. I carried
on with IMPROVISATION - THE FUTURE BEFORE THE PAST. |
| 31/08/2008
I finished the amendments to IMPROVISATION
- THE FUTURE BEFORE THE PAST and went into the garden - and then it rained! |
| 01/09/2008
I was in my studio a lot of today.
I started to repaint the lines of the second 1997 improvisation, namely:
IMPROVISATION - EVENTS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. This is a more intricate
work than its pendant so this process will take longer. |
| 02/09/2008
I continued to rework IMPROVISATION
- EVENTS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN in the morning and then went out with June
in the middle of the afternoon. I didn't do much when I came back. |
| 03/09/2008
I carried on amending IMPROVISATION
- EVENTS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. I reached about half way before going
out. I am out all day tomorrow. |
| 05/09/2008
I had a bad day; I broke the phone
and countless other minor disasters happened. I worked again on IMPROVISATION
- EVENTS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. |
| 06/09/2008
I finished repainting the lines
of IMPROVISATION - EVENTS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN. Nothing else to report
(definitely gardening tomorrow). |
| 08/09/2008
All I did today was cut and prime
some new MDF panels - plus a handful of pencil sketchbook drawings combining
the figure with landscape. |
| 09/09/2008
I started the pencil drawing stage
of the first, of six, new figurative fantasy improvisations. This
style of art (pioneered by Manfred Wing in the middle Seventies) is the
one closest to my heart.
I also primed a panel for a nativity
painting (ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD) incorporating visual transcriptions
from a Jimi Hendrix performance. |
| 10/09/2008
I continued working on the pencil
stage of IMPROVISATION ONE (subtitle to follow). This will take all
week as I am not in my studio for all of the day.
I am doing a few sketch book drawings
each evening this week. |
| 11/09/2008
I am still working on IMPROVISATION
ONE. I am not concentrating as much as I would like, although these
very complex works will vary depending on my mood etc.. |
| 12/09/2008
I completed the first stage of IMPROVISATION
ONE by the middle of the afternoon. I then started a second one but
soon had to go out. More sketch book pencil drawings. |
| 13/09/2008
I spent a large part of the morning
doing conventional representational sketches and eating chocolate raisins.
I also did more work on IMPROVISATION TWO, but not much. |
| 15/09/2008
I carried on with IMPROVISATION
TWO - and then had to go to hospital to have my hearing tested! |
| 16/09/2008
I didn't have too long to work today
but continued drawing in figurative images on IMPROVISATION TWO. |
| 17/09/2008
I worked again on IMPROVISATION
TWO most of my free time. I was hoping to complete the first stage
but didn't. |
| 18/09/2008
I completed the initial drawing
stage of IMPROVISATION TWO. I then put a thin was over this work
and the first one. I also put a wash on the blank panels which will
become three and four.
Somewhat stressed, didn't do much
else. |
| 19/09/2008
I |
| 20/09/2008
I |
| 22/09/2008
I spent most of the day painting
the background space of IMPROVISATION TWO. When I finish it I only
then need to redefine the pencil lines with paint to complete the work. |
| 23/09/2008
A shortened day, during which I
finished painting the background of IMPROVISATION TWO. |
| 24/09/2008
I started to paint over the pencil
lines of IMPROVISATION TWO with acrylic jar colour. This will take
some time, especially as I only had a few hours to work today and I am
out all day Thursday and possibly Friday, Saturday and Sunday. |
| 26/09/2008
Only an hour of two painting; I
continued painting the lines on IMPROVISATION TWO.
I also did more sketch book drawings. |
| 27/09/2008
Like yesterday a curtailed day as
I went out with my wife. I eventually did two to three hours of painting.
IMPROVISATION TWO again.
And more sketch book drawings. |
| 29/09/2008
I finished all the lines of IMPROVISATION
TWO. I need to paint the margin (which probably wasn't large enough)
but didn't have time today. |
| 30/09/2008
I started to repaint the lines of
IMPROVISATION THREE and did a third of the panel before having to go out
in the early afternoon. |
